Open Club Karolien Wauters

Residency Makershuis Tilburg

From November 14, Karolien Wauters will be working in our studio for several weeks as the creator of Makershuis Tilburg. Karolien graduated as a dancer from the Fontys Dance Academy with a focus on contemporary urban dance. Her individual movement language is based on popping and experimental dance. During her residency at the makers’ house, she explores how hand gestures, music, and body language can be combined into a universal language.

About the research ‘Sweet and Source’:

Sign language is a language based on hand shapes and facial expressions. Although we all use different gestures at different times, there is somehow agreement on hand gestures… or maybe not? This performance explores the following question: Is there a limit for the human brain to process information? And what happens to the body? Through mimicry, hand gestures, sound, and body language, a universal language is sought between moments of misinterpretation, information overload, and repetition where the source is nowhere to be found.

In our society, we obtain information more efficiently and as quickly as possible. Can our brains handle this speed? And where is the limit for the human body? During this research, conversations are held with people from the deaf community and everyone involved. What are their needs in art, and how can we improve so that art becomes inclusive for everyone? How can we turn the worlds of hearing and non-hearing people upside down?
