New PLAN Maker

Alesya Dobysh

From 2024, Alesya is connected to DansBrabant as PLANmaker. The next three years she will work on the further development of her experimental project Motus Sonus – a project she set up together with composer Max Frimout.

Alesya comes from the (Russian) street and club scene, where she developed a love for House Dance – a club style that emphasizes articulated legwork and heavy flow. She won awards at international battle events such as Juste Debout (Paris) and Summer Dance Forever (Amsterdam). With her movement language, Alesya brings her footwork to abstractions like rhythm, pulsation, silence or body sounds.

If you ask Alesya why do you create, why do you dance, the answer is, “Because that’s who I am.” Alesya is dance, breathes dance, thinks dance.

Motus Sonus:
Motus Sonus engages the play between movement, sound and space. The project began with a 2×2 wooden platform with transmitting microphones connected directly to Max’s modular synthesizers. Alesya’s movements formed the input for Max’s live composition. His sound, in turn, influenced Alesya’s choreography. The research gradually expanded, with the platform no longer the only form of interaction, but the acoustics of the entire space participating.

Motus Sonus grew over the past year into an interdisciplinary collaboration between diverse sound and movement artists. Alesya combined within herself the roles of dancer, choreographer and curator. Motus Sonus became an ongoing investigation into other collaborations and new ways of choreographing. The interaction between contemporary art and urban culture are an important source of inspiration. Last year editions already appeared in De Fabriek in Eindhoven, The Grey Space in the Middle in The Hague and in art gallery The Windmill in Seoul (South Korea), among others. DansBrabant was involved in the latest edition-until now-in De Pont museum in Tilburg.

During her PLAN period, Alesya is exploring her role as a curator and investigating a different way of making dance, in which sound, use of space, interdisciplinary collaboration and a different, active role of the audience are the keys. Known (genre) frameworks she challenges, others’ experiments she offers a platform. Alesya seeks collaboration with diverse venues and as yet unknown dance communities – in the Netherlands and abroad. Her PLAN period will conclude with a large Motus Sonus Festival in her own city.
