OPEN CLUB: DANAE THEODORIDOU
An Attempt To Devise a Democratic Assembly
During this experimental performance, we create our own democratic meeting, sharing our views on democracy and social coexistence based on a script by creator Danae Theodoridou. As participants, you are handed the script at the beginning and everyone is assigned a “role” common in a meeting: the speaker, the listener, the moderator. The script is used as a playful suggestion that guides us in what to do or say, or even refuse to do or say if we disagree with the script.
An Attempt To Devise a Democratic Assembly is part of Danae Theodoridou’s work on the practice of democracy, focusing on the relationship between performance and politics. Following Analogue Campaign (2019), which focused on the practice of public speaking, and Languages of the Unheard (2020), which experimented with the language of protests, this time the focus is on an embodied approach to the practice of assembly. Through a playful role-play in which a temporary assembly is formed, participants experiment with ways to practice democracy both individually and collectively, as part of a multi-voiced group.
Danae Theodoridou is a performance maker and researcher living and working in Brussels. Her artistic research focuses on social imagination, the practice of democracy and how art contributes to the emergence of socio-political alternatives.
The event is organized in collaboration with the Fontys Academy of the Arts as part of the research project Creative Democracy, conducted by Fontys Knowledge Center Creative Economy.
