Lecture Christianne Niesten

Focus on Women in Art, a Rewritten History

The installation ‘Catalog of Shadows II’ at PARK features a collection of life-sized female portraits, a composite universe of fragmented and grotesquely magnified, stereotypical female figures in constantly shifting facial expressions, poses, and emotions.

As part of the exhibition, on Thursday, November 9th, there will be a lecture by art historian Christianne Niesten titled ‘Focus on Women in Art, a Rewritten History.’ In the early twentieth century, women lacked opportunities in the art world, despite their talent and ambition. However, this situation has since changed. After the Second World War, several female artists made groundbreaking contributions to the visual arts and became inspiring role models for contemporary female artists. This has led to a changing perspective on the art canon and a rewriting of art history.

Christianne Niesten is an art historian and a lecturer in art theory at the Academy for Visual Arts and the Master of Arts Education at Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts.
