Unpacking Dance Dramaturgy

A Workshop by Rodia Vomvolou & DansBrabant

Outline
For whom: Starting and upcoming choreographers, dramaturges and dancers that have a particular interest for creation processes and composition.

Requirements: Bring a project you are working on (it could be a current one or a new idea).

Preparation: Reading some texts + doing an interview with yourself (after you are selected as a participant), answering questions like ‘who are you as an artist, what is your relationship to dramaturgy?’.

Aim:
To explore and reflect upon dramaturgical practices both on a theoretical and a practical level.

To gain practical tools for working on your projects from a dramaturgical perspective.

To offer you different formats to articulate and communicate your thoughts, questions or comments in regards both to your work and to the work of others.

Description:
What does dramaturgy mean and what forms does it take in the context of contemporary choreographic practice? How can we approach a dance project from the lens of dramaturgy? How can we think and act dramaturgically in a creation process?

Having these questions as a starting point, in this workshop, you will have the opportunity to explore dramaturgy both in a theoretical and in a practical level, through written, oral and movement, individual and group tasks. The workshop will touch upon contemporary approaches and notions of dramaturgy and the role of the dramaturg, while it will also offer practical dramaturgical tools and exercises that activate a dramaturgical dialogue in order to reflect upon, to evaluate and eventually to transform your creative process through the lens of dramaturgy. At the same time, you are provided with the space to ponder over thoughts and ideas around the relationship of dramaturgy with choreography. The workshop aims to open different formats for artists to articulate and communicate your thoughts, questions or comments in regards both to your work and to the work of others, in order to gain a different, renewed perspective of your own dramaturgical and creative process.

The workshop revolves around two aspects:

First aspect:
– Unpacking contemporary approaches and notions of dramaturgy and the role of the dramaturg.

– To touch assumptions and needs of you as a participant in relation to dramaturgy.

– Reading and discussing selected texts on dance dramaturgy.

– Reflecting on the relation between dramaturgy and choreography.

Second aspect:
– Focusing on your projects (concept development, mapping, choreographic tasks, feedback, etc.)

– Talking about your universe and artistic language

– Handing practical dramaturgical tools and exercises (dices, written/oral tasks, movement tasks)

– To activate the dramaturgical dialogue between all participants

– Peer-to-peer exchange to gain a different, renewed perspective of your own dramaturgical and creative process.
