Three Studies (for a self-portrait)

By Simon Bus

Simon has documented his life as a breakdancer in video portraits since his early years, and in 2019 he made the solo Self portrait, man on orange floor. Now he brings the sequel with a full-length dance performance. Simon turns dance forms inside out and upside down based on the discomfort of everyday existence.

For Simon Bus (b. 1989), dance is synonymous with individuality. As a B-boy, he already developed a movement language all his own. In 2013, he graduated from the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts & Design (Video-Visual Communication) while continuing to dance at the same time. With his inquisitive gaze and hyper-flexible body, Simon stretches ideas about breakdance. Besides breakdance as the ultimate source of inspiration, Simon finds points of reference in Butoh and in the work of Albert Camus, Egon Schiele, Francis Bacon and David Lynch, for example. The game between having control and yet losing it again is a recurring theme in his work.
