Movie night 15 years of Bold Moves Jelena Kostić
with SUNKEN WORKS I DON'T BITE by Ghaliah Conroy
In autumn 2024, it will be exactly 15 years since Dutch-Serbian choreographer Jelena Kostić founded her own dance company, based in Tilburg. We would like to celebrate this with them, of course. And we will do so on 12 December during a special evening of dance films.
With great pleasure we show there Sunken Works I Don't BITE by Ghaliah Conroy, the film Ghaliah made as part of the Virtual Residencies during the Dutch Dance Days.
GHALIAH CONROY - SUNKEN WORKS I Don't BITE
Under the title Sunken Works Ghaliah Conroy is working on a series of works around the theme of the Human Zoo, the 'exotic' exhibitions that took place in Europe well into the 20th century, where people of colour were displayed behind a fence for public viewing. What effect does this history have on black women today? With Sunken Works / Don't BITE is a cinematic exploration about looking and being looked at. How do you relate to a gaze that reduces you to a stereotype? And how do you reclaim your autonomy? Ghaliah is collaborating with audiovisual artist CJ Roxas for this research.
Also on show are: My Own Worst Enemy and Going home by Harrie Verbeek and Jelena Kostić and Spellbound By Nicola Hepp.
